Other freelance contacts

Back to top of page

These contacts are freelance colleagues in the world of children's book publishing. They're all people I've worked with or know well and can recommend. They don't all have websites, though, so most of these are mailto: links - please don't use them to hassle people with advertising, but only if you want to contact them for professional reasons.

Some of my favourite websites

Google My favourite search engine.
The BBCi website The best site on the web - not just news, but endless info of all kinds.
The Animal Diversity Web A brilliant resource for authoritative info about animals.
NASA NASA have redone their website, making it even flashier.
Exploratorium Science Museum Brilliant science site, especially good for experiments you can do at home - also check the Science Snacks.
The Mammal Society Find out everything about any British mammal on the free fact sheets. Also has a fun zone.
Anam Cara Writers' and artists' retreat I visited in December 2000, and I'll be going again.
Climate Kaleidoscope Beautiful and original public education site on climate, the rain forest and the scientists who work there.
Evolution Some evolution links provided by Talk.Origins, a site dedicated to a sensible scientific approach to the evolution v. creationism debate. As a children's science writer I'm opposed to censorship of science subjects, which is why I'm providing an evolution link from my site.

Gecko Edinburgh's top jazz-funk-soul-groove-rap threesome.
Irbis Strange wibbly-wobbly computer stuff.
Acoustic Edinburgh Magnificently chilled monthly music night, featuring the best local and far-flung songwriters, now transplanted to a perfect new venue at Medina.
KT Tunstall The hype is happening and KT is about to be launched on the world. I'm going to be sitting in front of MTV shouting "I know her!!!". Anyway, KT's songs and voice are stunning - think Joni Mitchell meets Janis Joplin, Carole King and Margo Timmins (and _don't_ think Dido or Norah Jones) - and she's going to be huge.
Rosie Brown The fact that Rosie isn't signed and playing on your stereo right now says it all about the mess that is the modern music industry. If you're looking for a laid-back, beautiful and consistently listenable jazz/pop/chillout CD to play again and again, send for "By the Blue" from the website – I promise you'll love it.
Ballboy Scotland's best indie band, also destined for great things.
Chamber Recording Studio/Human Condition records The Edinburgh muso's recording studio of choice.
